A very encouraging track record for the new solar pumps implemented by CDS in Mauritania

The new solar pumps have been implemented for more than six months now in the village of Wouloumbouni in Mauritania. As Kiva lenders receive their second reimbursement this month, it is the opportunity to provide a rapid overview of the outcomes and benefits of this new system for the 300 families of the village.
About the Project
In March 2014, Investisseurs & Partenaires decided to partner with the crowdfunding platform Kiva to fund a pilot project implemented by the Mauritanian company CDS.
Founded in 2010 and managed by Sidi Khalifou, CDS is a company committed to provide energy and water access for all. Their focus areas are the rural zones of the North Senegal valley, where the population are deprived from this access.

The pilot project consists in supplying clean water access through eco-friendly solution for the 300 families of the village of Wouloumbouni. The idea is to replace the diesel power generator by a solar power solution, which has three main advantages:
- The diesel generator is replaced by solar panels, which means an eco-friendly and sustainable energy
- A solar system is more reliable, and can ensure an uninterrupted access to clean water for the inhabitants
- There is no fluctuating cost
Outcomes and Results 6 months after the implementation
As for now, the solar system meets the expectations and proves to be a reliable, sustainable and cheaper solution for the company and the 3,000 persons relying on it for water access.
A reliable system:
- 0 breakdown or power cut,
- Uninterrupted water supply
- Volume pumped: 10,107 m3
A sustainable and cheaper solution:
- Significant reduction of the operating costs
- Pumping time reduced to 0
- Not dependent on oil price
