$1.6 billion invested by private equity funds in Sub-Saharan Africa in 2013

The Emerging Markets Private Equity Association (EMPEA) has recorded, in a report published in February, a total amount of $1.6 billion invested over the region, which tops the yearly invested amounts recorded over the past 5 years, and capitalize a 43% rise comparing to 2012. These astonishing figures show a sharp contrast with the average decrease of 7% on the overall investments made in global emerging markets.
Sub-Saharan Africa was a particularly attractive financial market this year thanks to the increase of consumer expenses and discovery of new natural resources. Regarding the very few quoted companies and the poor fluidity shown by the stock markets – apart from Johannesburg, Lagos and Nairobi – private equity can be, for that matter, a class of assets which grants a broader opening on fast-growing sectors in the region, a margin in which I&P is evolving since its inception.
